“Ask Alice”
“How do I know if I’m ready for home ownership?”
Dear Alice:
My husband and I have been renting for the past three years and
now that our daughter is turning two we are running out of space.
We would love to buy our own place but don’t know where to start.
Would we qualify for a Habitat Home?
Mary C - Gaylord
Dear Mary:
You have come to the right spot! Home ownership is not for
everybody and you need to determine if you are ready. Owning a
home requires a large investment of time, money and energy, so you
should make your decision to buy a home carefully. A housing
counselor, who is a trained professional working at a nonprofit
organization, can help you take a realistic look at what you can
expect from home ownership and what steps you would need to
take to become a homeowner. A counselor can help you review
your credit report and help you overcome barriers that could prevent
you from successfully achieving home ownership. The counselor
can also provide home buyer education classes so that you can
learn more about the home buying process. Call the local Habitat
for Humanity office in Gaylord at 989-732-6070 and sign up for our
next round of classes. I look forward to helping you become a
home owner and thanks for writing.
Alice
